Obituary

MASSSENA – Winifred “Winnie” G. Campbell, age 89, formerly of Massena, passed away at Mercy Living Center, Tupper Lake, after a brief bout with cancer on January 26, 2019, the day before what would have been her 90th birthday. Winnie was born January 27, 1929, in Massena, the daughter of the late Leo and Bertha Martin Patraw.

On May 24, 1947, she married Donald E. Campbell, in Massena, at Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Michael Jarecki, officiating. Donald predeceased Winnie, on January 17, 2014, after having been married for over 66 years.

Winnie worked for a short time as a clerk at the Massena J.J. Newberry Store, as well as at the Warner Brothers Garment Factory. Winnie enjoyed keeping many flower gardens at their various homes, as well as vegetable gardening with Don, throughout the years. She was a member of the Massena Woman’s Bowling League, as well as playing in a Mixed Doubles League, with her husband. Whenever her grandchildren visited they would find cookies, in the “cookie drawer”, which she always kept replenishing, as she like to try out new recipes.

After purchasing a travel trailer, in the 1970’s, Don and Winnie went on many trips, up and down the east coast and into Canada. When Don retired from Alcoa, in October 1981, they began the yearly trip out to Phoenix, Arizona, to stay until April of the following year. They did this for 28 years, enjoying Arizona sun then returning to the Massena area, in time for the warmer weather.

While in Arizona, Winnie joined craft and painting classes learning many new crafts and becoming a budding oil painter.

Winnie is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carole Ann and Michael Szeliga of Rainbow Lake, NY and Lori Jean and Terry Hutt of Columbia, TN; four grandchildren, Jennifer Szeliga Recor and her husband Jamie of Saranac, NY; Matthew Szeliga of Gabriels, NY; Aaron Hutt of Memphis, TN; and Terry Hutt, Jr. and his wife Rachelle of Columbia, TN; three great grandchildren, Brennan Donaldson, Olive and Judd Hutt; one sister-in-law, Joan Patraw; cousins, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; an infant daughter, Donna Jean who died at birth on September 17, 1954; two sisters and their husbands, Leola and Francis Raymo in 2002 and 2004; Jean and Sheldon Forkey in 2008 and 1982; and three brothers and their wives, Lawrence and Wally Patraw in 2005 and 2017; Gay Patraw in 2015; and Hugh and Patricia Patraw in 1984.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in the spring in Raymondville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.

My deepest sympathies for the loss of Mrs. Winifred. It is never easy to loss someone we dearly love in death.May the words, hope found at holy scriptures give you some peace and comfort in this difficult time. "Your dead will live. My corpses will rise up. Awake and shout joyfully, You residents in the dust! For your dew is as the dew of the morning, And the earth will let those powerless in death come to life". (Isaiah 26:19) Is that not comforting? this words always comforted me. The dead are in the safest situation imaginable, like an infant protected within its mother’s womb. Indeed, those resting in the grave are perfectly preserved within the limitless memory of Almighty God. (Luke 20:37, 38) And soon they will be brought back to life, entering a happy, welcoming world much the way a newborn is greeted by a loving, waiting family! Francis (JW)

I’m so sorry for the loss of this woman. My condolences go out to the Campbell family. There’s a Scripture I’d love to share that always comforted me when I lost someone in death. It’s in Revelation 21:4 which says: “And he [God] will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” This is a promise from God that he will end death forever in the future and we will see our loved ones again!

Hello, my name is Rebecca. I am from the Potsdam area. I was reading this obituary of Winifred Campbell, and I wanted to say to the friends and family of Winnie that I am deeply sorry for your loss. I also wanted to share a little word of encouragement that has always helped me in times of distress. A lot of people wonder where they can find help to deal with grief? 2 Corinthians 1:3,4 says, “Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trials so that we may be able to comfort others in any sort of trial with the comfort that we receive from God.” So it’s nice to know that we can receive form God anytime, anywhere. Thank you for letting me share my comforts.
