Obituary for Winifred G. "Winnie" Campbell (Patraw)

MASSSENA – Winifred “Winnie” G. Campbell, age 89, formerly of Massena, passed away at Mercy Living Center, Tupper Lake, after a brief bout with cancer on January 26, 2019, the day before what would have been her 90th birthday. Winnie was born January 27, 1929, in Massena, the daughter of the late Leo and Bertha Martin Patraw.

On May 24, 1947, she married Donald E. Campbell, in Massena, at Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Michael Jarecki, officiating. Donald predeceased Winnie, on January 17, 2014, after having been married for over 66 years.

Winnie worked for a short time as a clerk at the Massena J.J. Newberry Store, as well as at the Warner Brothers Garment Factory. Winnie enjoyed keeping many flower gardens at their various homes, as well as vegetable gardening with Don, throughout the years. She was a member of the Massena Woman’s Bowling League, as well as playing in a Mixed Doubles League, with her husband. Whenever her grandchildren visited they would find cookies, in the “cookie drawer”, which she always kept replenishing, as she like to try out new recipes.

After purchasing a travel trailer, in the 1970’s, Don and Winnie went on many trips, up and down the east coast and into Canada. When Don retired from Alcoa, in October 1981, they began the yearly trip out to Phoenix, Arizona, to stay until April of the following year. They did this for 28 years, enjoying Arizona sun then returning to the Massena area, in time for the warmer weather.

While in Arizona, Winnie joined craft and painting classes learning many new crafts and becoming a budding oil painter.

Winnie is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carole Ann and Michael Szeliga of Rainbow Lake, NY and Lori Jean and Terry Hutt of Columbia, TN; four grandchildren, Jennifer Szeliga Recor and her husband Jamie of Saranac, NY; Matthew Szeliga of Gabriels, NY; Aaron Hutt of Memphis, TN; and Terry Hutt, Jr. and his wife Rachelle of Columbia, TN; three great grandchildren, Brennan Donaldson, Olive and Judd Hutt; one sister-in-law, Joan Patraw; cousins, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; an infant daughter, Donna Jean who died at birth on September 17, 1954; two sisters and their husbands, Leola and Francis Raymo in 2002 and 2004; Jean and Sheldon Forkey in 2008 and 1982; and three brothers and their wives, Lawrence and Wally Patraw in 2005 and 2017; Gay Patraw in 2015; and Hugh and Patricia Patraw in 1984.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in the spring in Raymondville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
