Obituary for Julian H. LaCourse
MASSENA - Mr. Julian H. LaCourse, 88, of East Hatfield Street passed away peacefully on March 20, 2019 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. As per the family’s request, there will be no public calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the summer.
Julian was born April 9, 1930 in Massena, the son of the late Horace H. and Juliette (Mathieu) LaCourse. Julian graduated from Massena High School in 1948. He married Phyllis Brockway on November 27, 1952 (Thanksgiving Day) at St. Mary Church in Fort Covington with Reverend Edmund Dumas officiating.
After graduating from high school, Julian started his career at Alcoa in 1948. He proudly served his country during the Korean War from 1951 – 53. After the war, he returned to work at Alcoa. He attended evening classes at Canton ATC earning an Associates Degree. He continued to work at Alcoa for 44 years until his retirement in 1992. Julian retired as the Director of Computer Operations for Alcoa Massena Operations.
Julian is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Phyllis; two daughters, Kathleen (Tim) Ahlfeld and Lisa Barry, both of Massena; one son, Michael (Natalie) LaCourse of Cocoa Beach, Florida. He is also survived by six (6) grandchildren: Jessica MacKellar, Nicholas (Karen) Ahlfeld and Samantha Ahlfeld; Gavin and MacKenzie Lacourse; and Alexandar Barry. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Julian was predeceased by his son Mark and five (5) brothers Marcel, Lionel (Pete), Claude, Guy and Ronald LaCourse.
Julian was known for his calm demeanor and quick wit. He could talk about any subject and always made you feel better about yourself after a conversation. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed spending the summer months on the river at his camp on Pointe LeBlanc in Quebec. He especially enjoyed the evenings relaxing around the fire reading. However, nothing could top his love for his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them participate in all of their activities.
Julian was very active in the community. He served on the Massena Central School Board of Education including 5 years as President. He also served on the St Joseph’s Parish Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley and Trinity Catholic School.
