Obituary for Marjorie "Kwaronniahawi" "Margie" Thompson
AKWESASNE – Marjorie “Kwaronniahawi” Thompson, known throughout her community as Margie, 73, of Chief Thompson Lane, passed back into the Spirit World late Saturday evening, April 6, 2019 after a lengthy illness.
Margie was born September 20, 1945 in Cornwall, Ontario, the daughter of the late Bernard “Barnie” and Annie (Leaf) Thompson. She attended Indian Day School before going to St. Raphael’s School. She married Leo Francis and was blessed with four children before divorcing.
Margie worked within her community for many years first at Billy’s Bingo Hall and the Mohawk Bingo Palace before becoming the Manager at the Tri-District Elders Center, where she retired. She also served her community as a Cornwall Island District Chief for two terms. She was a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits, the Tri-District Elders, and the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens. Margie was well known for her sweet grass rosaries, crafting, and gardening. She loved playing bingo, camping, playing cards, visits to the casino, a good garage sale, and cherished the time she was able to spend with her family.
Margie is survived by her children, Cecelia “CeCe” and Barry Thomas, Anna and Eli Thompson, John Francis, and Paris “Perry” and Karen Francis, all of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Mallory, Joanie, Adam, Mikayla, Charlie, Tyson, Tameka, Jenna (Cam), Kristin (Charlie), Erica (Adam), Taylor, Corie, John Boy, Clint, and Tashawna; and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Joan and Richard Mitchell of Akwesasne, Mary Hopkinson of Saranac Lake; Louise and Darryl Thompson of Akwesasne; Linda Jackson of Akwesasne; and Sandra and Cedric Isaac of Walpole Island, Ontario; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Margie was predeceased by a grandson, Eli “Junior” Thompson; her brothers, Ronald B. “Ronnie” Thompson, Frank A. Thompson, and Gerald Michael “Wash” Thompson; her sister-in-law, Gloria Thompson; and her brother-in-laws, Bruce Jackson, Al Cheress, and Harry Hopkinson.
Friends may call at the Tri-District Elders Center starting on Tuesday 12:00 PM until Wednesday 12:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday 2:00 PM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating. Cremation will follow.
