MASSENA- Donald S. Young Sr., 82, 212 Fregoe Road, passed away early Monday morning, December 10, 2012 at Massena Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past four years.
Donald was born July 24, 1930 in Gouverneur, the son of John R. and Mina House Young. On August 25, 1952, Donald married Betty Dickson in Antwerp, she predeceased him on December 7, 1979. He later married Nancy L. Carter Garrow on July 10, 1982 at the First United Methodist Church in Massena.
He was a Master Sergant in the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Reserves until his retirement. He also worked for the St. Lawrence Seaway as an electrician until his retirement. He was a member of the Earl J. Santimaw Post #1143 VFW, Gerald R. Roy Post #4 AMVETS, American Legion Post #79, and a former member of the Massena Rescue Squad, where he was a former Chief from. Donald enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping.
Donald is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nancy; two sons, Donald S. Young Jr. of Plano, TX; and James W. and Terry Young, of Mckinney, Texas; three step children, Michael and Wendy Garrow of Elizabeth City, NC, Patrick Garrow of Constable, and Cherie and John O’Donnell of North Tonawanda, NY; and six grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
Donald was predeceased by he brothers Richard “Dick”, Phillip, and Wayne Young.
Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where the members of the AMVETS, VFW, and American Legion will meet at 7:15 for a memorial service. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, 10:00 AM, Rev. Heather Steirheim, officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Kinne Cemetery, Antwerp, NY.
