Gary Wayne  Cassell

OGDENSBURG – Mr. Gary Wayne Cassell, 69, a longtime resident of Ogdensburg, passed away early Friday morning at St.Luke’s-Faxton Hospital, Utica, after a lengthy illness.

Gary was born April 28, 1947 in Potsdam, the son of Gertrude Castle and was a 1966 graduate of Norwood-Norfolk Central School. On August 15, 1966, he entered the US Navy, proudly serving his country both at home and overseas. He served on the USS Muliphin, AKA 61, the “Mighty Mule”. He was honorably discharged on August 14, 1968 and continued to serve in the Naval Reserves until 1974. After his service time, he went back to college and earned is Associates Degree from Canton ATC in 1980. He was married at one time to Vicky Bicknell, which ended in divorce.

Gary was the maintenance and cleaning person in the meat department at Price Chopper in Ogdensburg for many years. He was a member of the American Legion in Potsdam and loved to play Dungeons and Dragons and Majic card games. He loved animals, especially his cats, spending time visiting with his friends and family, playing cards, and attending family gatherings. He also enjoyed listening to country music, especially Bluegrass and loved the joys of the Christmas holiday.

Gary is survived by his sister, Elaine LaClair and her companion, Randy Dewey of Massena; his cousins, who were also his “brothers and sisters,” Sandra and Tim Shoen of Chipman; Michael and Sarah Brown of Sedona, AZ; Donna and Bill Cuthbert of Madrid; Trev Brown and Ky Bendt of Brookdale; and Patrick Brown of Austin, TX; and their respective families.

In addition to his beloved mother, Gary was predeceased by an infant daughter, Angela Cassell; his aunt, Doris Brown; his grandmother, Cozetta Mae Miller; and a cousin, David Brown.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Parishville.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Potsdam Animal Shelter, the American Heart and Lung Association, or the American Kidney Foundation.
