Lynn Marie Smiddy, 53, of Ft. Covington, WALKED into the arms of her Savior on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. She was a patient at CVPH in Plattsburgh where she ended her courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her family and the wonderful nursing staff on the 5th Floor Oncology.
Lynn was born November 21, 1963, the daughter of Raymond and Laurie (Holbert) Smiddy. She is survived by her parents, her brother Gordon of Ft. Covington, and her niece Allison of Rensselaer, NY; two special aunts and an uncle Mrs. Susan Davis of Pavilion, NY, and Mr. and Mrs. Rick (Louise) Pelotte of Clay, NY. She was predeceased by her nephew Nicholas Smiddy, her paternal grandparents Charles and Florence Smiddy, her maternal grandparents Floyd and Julia (Anne) Holbert, and several aunts and uncles. Many cousins survive.
Lynn graduated from Salmon River Central School with the class of 1980 and from SUNY Canton in 1982. She was an avid sports fan and cheerleader for many of the SRCS sports teams. She was always there to cheer on her brother, nephew, and niece in their athletic endeavors. She especially loved attending softball games at SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Plattsburgh (2009-12) when Allison was playing on those teams—especially the Plattsburgh Cardinals Girl’s Softball team of 2012 when they battled their way to the Division III National Championship in Virginia. She was a great supporter of the Adirondack Diamonds Summer Softball (2004-2009)—traveling to many tournaments around the state and loving every minute!
Those who knew Lynn know that she was a lover of Syracuse Orange Basketball—a die-hard fan, if ever there was one. How she enjoyed attending some of their games. On Sunday, April 2, she received a phone call from Syracuse Head Coach Jim Boeheim—one of the wishes on her bucket list!! Thank you, Jim (and Allison for making the connections)!!
Lynn loved spending the last twenty winters in Trailer Estates in Bradenton, FL, where she made so many friends and met so many “snow birds” from all over the country. She was known as the good-will ambassador of the park—wheeling around with her smiling face and stopping to visit with everyone! How she enjoyed bingo games and trips to the casino. Being with people was Lynn’s favorite pastime. A special thanks to the Salmon River staff and teachers for always making her feel she was a welcomed visitor all these years.
Lynn was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Massena. She attended Sunday School and church services regularly. She also enjoyed attending special evening classes offered by the church.
As per Lynn’s request, there will be no public viewing. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life at Calvary Baptist Church (The Church by the Mall), Massena, NY, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017. Please dress casual and wear something Syracuse orange—if you wish!! A luncheon will be served at the church after the celebration where family will greet those who attended.
The family requests that there be no flowers, but memorial gifts can be given in Lynn’s memory to the Mission Fund, Calvary Baptist Church, PO Box 642, Massena, NY 13662 or the Fort Covington Volunteer Fire Department, 2454 Chateaugay St., Ft. Covington, NY 12937.
