Mrs. Joanna R. Whitecrow, 79, of Wyandotte, Oklahoma, unexpectedly passed away Wednesday evening, October 4, 2017 at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Joanna was born on March 28, 1938 in Talaquah, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Jeff and Etta Mae Wolfe Vann and was a graduate of Sequoiah Indian School. She was a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and was active with the Native American Theatre in Oklahoma for many years.

Joanna worked for JC’s in Tulsa for many years. She also was an election monitor in Tulsa for over 20 years. She was a very creative person and took pleasure in putting her creativity to many items, such as wall art and jewelry to name a few. She was an excellent cook, had an excellent sense of humor, and enjoyed stomp dancing. Of all her hobbies and interests, her love for her children, grandchildren, and friends was her greatest love.

Joanna is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and John Thomas of Akwesasne; her sons, John and Alfred Whitecrow of Oklahoma; her grandchildren, Lawrence (Jackie) Thomas, Starr Thomas, Falon Thomas, Vann Whitecrow, Jane Whitecrow, Dami Simmering, Alana Point, Jake Whitecrow, Krissy Ann White, Keisha White, David Whitecrow, Chris Whitecrow, Cody Whitecrow, Taryn Whitecrow, and Byron Whitecrow; and her great grandchildren, Tylar, Destin,Riley, Bryson, and John Thomas, Preston Ransom, Issac and Emma Hoskison, Rachel, Jrake, Jraya, and Jre Whitecrow. She is also survived by her sister, Valerie Hayes of California; her brother, David (Sonya) Vann of Oklahoma; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jay Whitecrow; her son Jay Whitecrow, Jr. in 2016, and two grandchildren, John and Casey Whitecrow in 1993.

Friends may call at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, 485 State Route 37, beginning 2:00 PM Saturday until 2:00 PM Sunday, when funeral services will be held.
